Everything you eat can be broken down into two very important categories – Macro and Micro nutrients or as I call them the shell and cell nutrients.
Macronutrients = Shell (Fat and Muscle)
In general, macronutrients will affect the shell of yourself or what you see in the mirror when dieting. Macronutrients determine how lean or fat you are. Lucky for us, there are only 3 nutrients we need to remember in this category.
Protein, Carbohydrates, and Fats. All things you’ve heard of before and for obvious reasons. Since these nutrients affect how you look, they get all the attention – sex sells and health doesn’t. Determining how many grams of each of these is the key to unlocking your perfect diet. More on this later.
Micronutrients = Cell (Internal Health)
These nutrients are vital for performing cellular functions that keep you happy and healthy. While these nutrients won’t drastically affect your body composition, they will allow you to live longer and healthier. Another way to remember these is that these nutrients affect what you can see under a “micro”scope. The three general nutrients under this category are Vitamins, Minerals, and Water intake.
Dieting for You
The perfect diet is a marriage of these two categories. Consuming an optimal amount of “micros” and “macros” to be healthy and proud of how you look in the mirror. Reaching this level of dieting is exceptionally challenging, but not out of reach with practice. The key starting place is to look at your own goals and what motivates you. Is it being healthy and seeing your kids grow up while trying to avoid having to be placed into a nursing home? (Micronutrient Based Goals) Is it simply to lose weight and increase your odds of meeting your future spouse? (Macronutrient Based Goals) Whichever you are, that is where you build from.
